Counselling Programs

Child Resource and Family Services

Children and youth who are experiencing social or emotional difficulties may receive supportive services from a broad range of child and youth counsellors. Issues that are dealt may include: loss and grief, lack of social skills, bullying, aggression and isolation. Children and youth may receive traditional counselling plus play therapy, social skill modeling, community integration activities and more. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Referrals are accepted from anyone.

Services may not be available immediately and you will be advised of any waiting period. You will also be advised of other services that may be of interest to you. NVCSS is not an emergency service but will provide support during office hours. Please ask you counsellor for a list of available emergency support services. Counselling staff in this program generally have bachelor's degrees in fields such as psychology, social work, education, etc. Please ask your counsellor about his/her training and experience.

Children Who Witness Violence

Children and youth who have witnessed emotional, physical, financial or sexual abuse within their families may receive counselling from a qualified service provider. Interventions will include traditional counselling plus play therapy, water and sand tray therapy, narrative therapy and psycho-education regarding safety planning and healthy relationships. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Referrals are accepted from anyone.

Mental Health Counselling for Children & Youth

Currently a range of interventions are utilized including art therapy, sand and water tray therapy, play therapy and when needed referrals for more in-depth psychological, psychiatric, or socio-educational assessments are made. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Referrals are accepted from anyone.

Children and adolescents who are victims of sexual abuse or assault and their caregivers may receive counselling and psycho-educational support from a qualified counsellor. Youth Justice

Counselling and support for completing community service work is provided for youth who are on probation and are referred by Youth Court Workers. Counselling covers a wide range of issues including anger management, harm reduction, building of positive self identity, and goal setting. When needed, referrals for psychiatric, psychological, or socio-educational assessment may be made. Service is provided in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof.

Community Outreach Programs

CARE Parent

Foster parents who currently are providing care to a child and who may require additional supports or education are matched with a trained service provider for individual mentoring and support. The Care Parent worker works very closely with Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) social workers and foster parent supports. Referrals to this program are made by the MCFD. The CARE Parent program is staffed by a full time worker to serve the communities of Burns Lake, Fort Fraser, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof and surrounding areas.

Community Action Program For Children (Cap-C)

Children, families and caregivers who are impacted by fetal alcohol exposure may receive a variety of support and educational services from trained service providers. Services may include drop in play times for families and children, psycho-educational groups, workshops and other community based activities. Specific groups have included Rhyme Time, Gym Time and Roots of Empathy. Family drop ins are also offered in Stellaten and Fort St James for families with pre-school children. Cap-C direct programming is meant for infants and children up to the age of six but, prevention programming is offered to everyone. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Referrals are accepted from anyone.

Infant Development Program

The Nechako Valley Infant Development Program is a home-based visitation program in which Infant Development Consultants provide support and assistance to families of infants (ages 0 to 3 years) with potential or actual developmental delays. The IDP consultant helps children and their families to access stimulating social, educational, and community experiences, with the goal of helping these children to grow up in a nurturing, supportive environment that maximizes their potential. Outreach services for Infant Development Consultants are available in all of the communities that we serve and referrals are accepted from anyone. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Referrals are accepted from anyone.

Lifeline

Lifeline is a service that we offer in all the communities that we serve. Lifeline is an easy to use medical alarm service designed to reduce the risk of living alone. In the event of a fall or emergency, simply push the lifeline button (worn as part of a necklace around your neck or as a wristband), and help is available by connecting you to a trained Personal Response Associate. This person will quickly determine your needs and send help quickly – 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Meals on Wheels

Our meals on wheels service is provided to people in the Vanderhoof area that are unable to prepare a meal because of physical or mental disability or they are unable to obtain the supplies to make a meal (often transportation barriers are the reason). We provide one hot meal per weekday delivered to your home within a 10 kilometre radius of Vanderhoof. The cost of the meal per day is $5.50 and this low cost is made possible by the generosity of our Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Special Services to Children

Family Support Workers are available to assist families and children with a variety of life and parenting skills. These skills may include financial management, meal preparation, parenting to enhance attachment, positive discipline and setting limits. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Referrals to this program are made by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Victim Assistance Program

Any victim of a crime including power based crimes of assault, criminal harassment or sex crimes, property offences and other crimes may receive crisis intervention and on-going support including court accompaniment through this program. Clients may receive assistance in completing a Crime Victim Assistance Program application and information on what to expect as a witness in court. Service is provided in Vanderhoof and Fort St James. Referrals are accepted from anyone.

Community Living Programs

Residential Programs

Adults with developmental disabilities who require 24 hour support are a perfect fit with our Residential Programs. Our goal is to provide homes which closely resemble a close-knit family unit, with ‘together’ meal-times, activities that can be shared by all in the home, and fun-time outings. A place where our clients feel they belong, can have friends over, share their lives and activities with their roommates and make their home uniquely their own. We currently have two homes with three clients in each home which are funded through Community Living BC (CLBC) and are licensed under the Community Care Facility Act. Clients are referred and contracted through CLBC.

Self Help Program

Self-confidence, decision-making skills, personal planning and self-determination are all areas that the Self Help program will assist clients with. Clients who have developmental disabilities will maximize their independence in their home and within the community through life skills training according to the goals that the client has set for themselves. Individual service plans are created with input from the clients and their CLBC facilitator. The life skills workers support the plan by providing activities that teach cooking, nutrition, menu planning, grocery shopping, budgeting, household skills, personal care skills, socialization and job readiness skills and any other activity that may be required to enhance the clients’ independence. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Clients are referred and contracted through CLBC.

Semi Independent Living Skills (SILS)

Adults with developmental disabilities who need a little extra help with their independent living choice will benefit from the SILS program. Our clients live either on their own or with family, in their own apartment or house. The life skills workers help with menu preparation, shopping, household skills, educational support, and budgeting. We can also provide any other support that may be required which will enable a client to maintain the living situation they have chosen. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof. Clients are referred and contracted through CLBC.

Supported Work/Vocational Incentive Program

All of us look forward to the feeling of satisfaction in a job well-done. Adults with developmental disabilities are no different and the Supported Work program assists clients in developing job readiness skills. Life skills workers will help clients access job-search/placement agencies, create a résumé, explore employment options and develop skills necessary to maintain paid work in our community. This service is available in Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof.

Children and youth can access services to assist them with their developmental disabilities. Some of the activities in this program include learning everyday skills such as personal hygiene and working with a child and youth care worker to learning how to manage emotions. Activities may also be centered around getting children and youth engaged in extra-curricular activities. Clients need to be assessed for services based on the criteria that CLBC provides including an IQ generally under 70. This service is offered in Fraser Lake, Fort St James and Vanderhoof.
