Children and Youth:
Child and Youth counsellors provide counselling services to children and youth experiencing difficulties in their lives due to a varied range of problems. This could include treating such disorders as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome, sexual or physical abuse issues, self esteem, anxiety, grief and loss, etc. Support is also given to parents of children receiving services.
Children and Youth:
Mental Health therapy and assesment is provided to children and youth, up to the age of 18, who may be experiencing a significant mental health issue.
Psycho-educational groups or presentation:
Some examples of topics that may be covered are, stress management, assertiveness or anger management.
» Victim's Assistance Program is available. Clients may receive crisis intervention and on-going support, including court accompaniment through the program.
» Home Support Services are provided to clients who do not qualify for assistance under the Northern Health Authority.
» Meals on Wheels and Lifeline Services are co-ordinated.
» Referrals are made to other services either in the community or in the region, if deemed appropriate and necessary.
» Residential and Community based support available for people with developmental disability
» Mental Health Therapists who are employed with Nechako Valley Community Services are required to have, at the minimum, a degree in the counselling field, social work or nursing. We currently employ three therapists in this capacity.
» Child and youth counsellors must possess a diploma or preferably a degree in a relevant discipline.
» All of our counselling staff have developed close working relationships with other professionals working in the area. Our mental health therapists often refer to and consult with psychiatrists, psychologists and other staff working in regional mental health in Prince George as well as maintaining connections with provincial mental health resources such as the Maples Adolescent Centre and Children’s Hospital. Good working relationships are maintained with local physicians, other counselling resources such as Drug and Alcohol and with school personnel.
» Qualified Community Health Workers provide home support services.
» Volunteers co-ordinate and operate the Meals on Wheels Program in Vanderhoof and Fort St. James.
» The Victim Assistance Program staffed largely by volunteer members.
